NYS DEC comes to their senses.

The trout here in the northern ADKs are carnivorous as this picture shows. The minnow Rich used is almost as big as the trout but he still took it on. It is great to see so many small wild fish and every stream here has them in them. This is great when training young fishermen, nothing spurs them on like success. The reason for this post is that the DEC is going to relax the restrictive bait laws so that once again you will be able to pick and transport live minnows again. There will still be restrictions but the indication is that they are reaching a balance on protecting fish from VHS yet realizing that fishermen should not be penalized for something they had nothing to do with. The adjusted laws will probably not go into affect till this fall but at least there is hope. These laws have crippled the bait business and fishermen using live bait. This winter I spoke to fishermen that were driving 50 miles, round trip, to buy bait because most small bait shops have been forced out of business. At $4 gas prices the bait was costing about 40 cents a minnow. Great for the oil companies bad for the fishermen. More information is forthcoming on the DEC website and I will post here when it comes out. Bye for now!!

Now thats what I’m talking about…

This is one the two that Mark kept for him and his mother. A fabulous Mothers Day weather wise and this one and the other 18 incher stuffed with a shrimp stuffing and done on the BBQ, caused the Food Channel to swing in off the highway to investigate. Overall Mark landed 7 and said he had about 50 attacks but the little weasels kept short striking and lucking out. Revenge is a meal we like to serve up with steel inserted. Nice fish because the stream he caught them in is not very big. The stream is in the Oneonta area of mid state NY but I will rarely mention the exact name where we are in order to protect the detective work of some other fishermen to find this spot.

Lake Ontario is Smoking!

The boys were back at Ontario and the thunder sticks were hot again. Here is Osama Bin Swackhammer with a nice one. Pictured below is one of his trusted advisers Lenny Bin Budweiser. If you are fishing on the lake and see either one of these two near your boat I suggest that you return to the harbor and contact the Coast Guard immediately. There is a reward which can be claimed at Davey’s Last Chance Saloon in Chenango Forks, NY. The fish pictured here were caught on a Dupont Spinner, which is a Quarter stick duct taped to the downrigger ball.

Monsters on the prowl

These are the kind of trout you can realistically hope to catch here on a trip to Adirondack Retreats. This region is blessed with some awesome trout fishing and due to the incredible forage base the trout grow very large. I have watched videos from all parts of the world and the trout here are just as big and more plentiful. The big thing is that you are here in New York with out a 10,000 mile flight. With the temperatures starting to finally get to where they belong, the fishing is going to pop. We fish a host of rivers and streams in our region and they cover the spectrum of sizes and flows. The result is that no matter what Mother Nature throws at us there is always a spot that is very fishable. Every rivulet up here has trout in it and they are mostly wild fish. We cover waters that will challenge every skill level. This is a great place to teach youngsters about nature and fishing. World class fishing at sane prices is what we are about, give us a call!
