I thought the dog days were in August????

The dog is about the only one loving the weather lately. Its been hotter than my ex-wife after a couple of margaritas. Trout fishing has come to a halt and even the river fishing in the Susquehanna is questionable at best. I went small mouth fishing last night and the river water was 87 degrees. Now I have an idea of how a lobster feels as he is lowered in. The carp fishing has been outstanding however and the kids think this is the greatest thing since sliced bread.  So not all is lost and I just love watching them battle 20# carp. This weather has forced me into the shop and I have to admit I have been getting a lot accomplished in preparation for the upcoming fall fishing and I constructed several of my custom tree stands and if the weather gets cool in the morning I will get them in place early in the morning. I only have 4o some stands out as it is so I better get some more in. Actually my son is now 12 and here in NY they just lowered the bow hunting  age to 12 his tail is wagging to go. I LOVE IT!!!!! The new stands are going to be put in places that I don’t hunt but are guaranteed shot opportunities. Another thing I have been preparing is my minnow holding operation now that we can once again pick our own minnows and not have to buy one that has a USDA certified stamp on his ass. This law was like 6 burrs under my saddle. Once again the people who had nothing to do with the problem were the ones that were penalized and yet the ones whom are causing the problem are allowed to continue on as usual. Why aren’t the ships bringing in their bilge water having to sterilize it before they dump it in the Great Lakes???? Oh yeah that’s right some company that sent our jobs offshore wouldn’t make his 10,000% profit. I better stop now before I have to go drink a 12 pack of sedatives. FISH ON AND OFTEN FRIENDS!!!

BABY ITS HOT OUTSIDE!!!

A heat wave covers the nation and I am already working on deer gear and preparing stuff for fall. Now is a great time to take it easy and work on some of  these projects with an ice cold beverage and a fan on you instead of waiting till late fall. Then you are in a panic as you try to sort everything out, prune and set stands, scout get the boat ready for walleye season…. You get my drift. Here at Papa Bears Outdoors it is a year round mission and over the years I have learned to prepare ahead of time so that these are the results.  Under the full moon the other night I went to pick my lovely daughter up from a friends house near where I do much of my hunting and the deer were everywhere. With the heat during the day they are on the move at night and it is a great time to take cool evening drive with the kids and incorporate a little scouting into the mix. You know quality time with the kids , bonding and oh yeah instilling hunting and fishing into their minds instead of Facebook and video games. Now in mid July most of the bucks have pretty much grown their racks, the fields have been mowed and it is good time to evaluate the boys. They probably will not be in the  same places come hunting season but at least you know they are in the area. I just love seeing one now that looks like he has a cardboard box on his head due to the mass and velvet. I had one in the front yard the other morning eating the neighbors bushes, he is a tank and looked to be a potential 140 class. He has been placed high on the removal list. I love these suburban bucks. They are hard hunted, used to people and if you can master fooling them then you can fool bucks almost anywhere. The mature eastern whitetail is the one trophy that most world traveled hunters don’t have on their walls. This is my brother-in-laws kitchen and he had never bow hunted till he met me. Now they have taken over the house. (BIG SMILE) STAY COOL!!!!!

Summer in full swing

We have gone from building arks to selling sun screen and divining rods to find water in a few short months. Trout fishing has pretty much become an early morning or last thing in the evening event. In fact I rarely fish for them when weather like this sets in due to the stress it places on them. Now is when I like to fish the rivers for smallmouths and muskies. This is a 49 inch/ 35# er that I caught in the fall a few years back on 6# test while jigging for walleyes. This is a fine example of some of the huge fish that the Susquehanna River contains. It is an amazing fishery that is very underutilized. Yet in recent years the state has added in many new boat launches and access to the river in the NY stretch near Binghamton. Maybe think about a trip here for a day or two and then maybe a day or two on the West Branch of the Deleware which is some of the best tailwater trout fishing in the east. It is a little crowded but the fish are there and some are huge. On the Susquehanna there is very little pressure and many smallmouths. The river is relatively shallow with numerous deep holes, so don’t bring a big boat with a big draft. My main offices are here in the Binghamton area so feel free to call me about info on the area if you are thinking about a trip to the Southern Tier of NY. Great roads connect the whole state right here.

We Love New York

Here we are in July and Atlantic Salmon of this caliber are being caught. As usual I will not reveal the location in order to not start a stampede but this puppy taped out at 28 inches, was caught on a dry fly and was released !!! Dave is soon to become a licensed NYS Guide and will  impress the hell out of you with the skills this young man already possess. I have to chuckle when I tell people that I am from New York and the first thing they think of is New York City. Our state may be a little screwed up on its fiscal and business policies but we are blessed with some of the most diverse and awesome recreational venues in the nation. This wonderful salmon caught right here in NY is just one example of the amazing fisheries that we are able to enjoy all year. Now that the old bear is starting to become some what familiar with the blossoming Internet and associating myself with some people whom truly understand it, I will be able to bring you more and more information.
